Reading Time: 11 minutes

This article is about ways to boost your productivity with inspiration from the world’s most creative cities.

You’re not alone if you’re overwhelmed by the constant demands of work, family, and personal commitments. Burnout is so sneaky – you don’t know it’s happening until you’re staring at the ceiling, feeling drained and uninspired.

While I would love to jump on a plane to Fiji every time I hit a slump at work, I actually need to get things done sometimes. It’s unfortunate, I know, but I’ve got bills to pay!

If you can’t always travel when you need inspiration, bringing travel to your home is a powerful way to reignite your creativity. Read on for my favorite ways to bring travel-inspired play into your day.

Don’t have time to read it all?

Use travel-inspired play to reignite your creativity and boost your productivity by (1) changing your environment, (2) listening to global beats, (3) trying foreign cuisine, (4) discovering new stories, (5) creating a travel routine, and (6) planning a trip as a reward.

Change Your Environment to Boost Your Productivity

One of the simplest ways to boost your productivity is by changing your environment.

No, no, put that suitcase down! Today’s tips can be completed from the comfort of your home. We’re not avoiding work here; we’re just making it easier.

While decor profoundly impacts your mood and focus, changing your environment can even more profoundly impact your productivity and creativity.

Change breaks the monotony and stimulates your brain, encouraging you to think in new ways. It can disrupt habitual patterns, making you more aware and present, leading to greater focus and innovative thinking.

This isn’t a free license to entirely renovate your home office. Focus on incorporating elements that inspire you and create a conducive environment for your work.

For example, if you love the vibrant street art in Berlin, consider adding colorful artwork to your walls or opt for a more industrial and minimalist look inspired by the city’s architecture.

If you enjoy the cozy cafes of Amsterdam, create a comfortable nook in your workspace with plush cushions and warm lighting.

5 Steps to Designing a Room Inspired by a City

1) Choose Your City:

Select a city that embodies the vibe you want to bring into your space. Whether it’s the artistic flair of Paris, the industrial charm of Berlin, or the coastal serenity of Sydney, your chosen city will set the foundation for your design.

2) Research Key Elements:

Once you’ve chosen a city, delve into the characteristic design elements that define it. Look into architectural styles, predominant color schemes, popular materials, and decor trends. Understanding these aspects will help you accurately capture the city’s essence within your room.

3) Select a Color Palette:

Use the city’s landscapes, architecture, and atmosphere to inspire your color choices. For example, a room inspired by Santorini might prioritize shades of white and blue, reminiscent of the island’s iconic buildings and the Aegean Sea. Create a cohesive palette that can be reflected in your walls, furniture, and accessories.

4) Incorporate Signature Decor Pieces:

Identify signature decor items emblematic of your chosen city. These could include vintage photographs of Parisian cafes, rustic wooden furniture reminiscent of a Tuscan villa, or sleek modern fixtures echoing New York lofts. These pieces will serve as focal points and bring authenticity to your design.

Below are a few ideas to get you thinking.

Parisian Elegance

Paris is synonymous with elegance and artistic flair. Incorporate Parisian elements into your workspace with vintage posters, vibrant chic furniture, and soft lighting.

Parisian decor can make your workspace feel like a charming café, fostering an environment where creativity thrives.

New York Vibes

New York City is a melting pot of cultures and creativity. Think of raw industrial design—exposed brick walls, metal accents, and bold art pieces to channel that energy. Add a modern desk lamp and a stylish chair to create a workspace that feels dynamic and inspiring.

The vibrant and fast-paced atmosphere of New York can motivate you to tackle your tasks with enthusiasm.

Scandinavian Simplicity

Copenhagen is known for its minimalist yet cozy (hygge) design. Focus on decluttering your workspace, using neutral colors, and incorporating natural materials like wood and plants. A simple, clean desk setup can help clear your mind and enhance your focus.

The Scandinavian approach to design emphasizes functionality and aesthetics, creating a serene environment that supports productivity.

5) Add Personal Touches

Personalize the space by incorporating elements that reflect your experiences and memories of the city. This could be souvenirs from your travels, photographs, or handmade crafts reminiscent of the local culture. These personal touches will create a deeper connection to the space and make it uniquely yours.

If you have yet to visit your city of choice, it would be lovely to frame a handwritten letter or poem to yourself or the city.

The key is creating an environment that energizes and motivates you while reflecting your style and interests.

Listen to International Music or Sounds for a Rapid Productivity Boost

Sound plays a crucial role in setting the mood for work. The right music or ambient sounds can either pump you up for a challenging task or help you relax for deep, insightful work. Explore international music and sounds to find what resonates with you.

2) Leverage Social Media and Forums:

Engage with music enthusiasts on Reddit, Twitter, and music forums. Join groups dedicated to world music where members share their favorite artists and tracks. This can be a valuable source for discovering unique music.

3) Organize by Mood and Activity:

Immerse Yourself in Stories That Ignite Your Imagination

Storytelling is a timeless way to inspire action and creativity. Whether through books or films, immersing yourself in stories from around the world can provide a fresh perspective on age-old issues.

Read “The Alchemist”

Reading is the best way to immerse yourself in storytelling because it allows for a deeply personal and intimate connection with the narrative.

Reading uniquely engages the imagination, enabling you to create mental images and interpretations of the story. This active participation can lead to a richer and more meaningful understanding of the text.

Reading at your own pace allows you to savor the details, contemplate the themes, and revisit sections, enhancing overall enjoyment.

“The Alchemist” by Paulo Coelho is one of my all-time favorite stories. It is a novel set in Spain and Egypt that takes you on a mystical journey of self-discovery.

The themes of pursuing your dreams and finding purpose can be incredibly motivating. Reading this novel can inspire you to stay committed to your goals and explore new possibilities.

Watch “Midnight in Paris”

Sometimes, we don’t have the time or emotional energy to read a book. We need a quick escape.

Watching a movie can be an incredibly effective mode of storytelling because it offers a multi-sensory experience.

Movies can condense complex narratives into a shorter time frame, which is magical for a busy schedule.

“Midnight in Paris” is a comedy directed by Woody Allen that takes us to 1920s Paris, a time and place known for its artistic and literary brilliance. I had a good laugh watching it, and it got me thinking about how I would interact with some of the people who have inspired my creative journey.

Listen to Global Podcasts

Podcasts are an excellent way to hear stories and insights from across the globe. Find podcasts featuring interviews with creative professionals, travel stories, or cultural explorations.

Listening to these stories can give you new ideas and perspectives to apply to your work.

A new favorite of mine is Your Sustainable Friend, a podcast about global sustainability and the environmental impacts of our daily choices.

Learn a Few Phrases in a Different Language

Challenging your brain by learning basic phrases in a new language can boost your cognitive abilities in surprising ways.

You learn to make new connections and pick up on nuance, which can help you overcome a mundane task.

Start with Simple Greetings

Begin with simple greetings and common phrases in languages you’ve encountered during your travels.

For example, learn how to say “good morning” in French (bonjour) or “thank you” in Japanese (arigato). These small efforts can open up a new world of communication and cultural understanding.

Use Language Learning Apps

Many language learning apps are available that make it easy to practice a new language daily. Apps like Duolingo and Babbel offer short, interactive lessons that can fit into your schedule.

I just hit a 720-day streak on Duolingo, and I’m genuinely surprised at how much I’ve learned in 10-20 minutes a day. I’ll be testing out my new language skills in Spain this summer. Wish me luck!

Practice with Native Speakers

If possible, practice speaking with native speakers. Join language exchange groups or find conversation partners online. Engaging in real conversations can enhance your language skills faster than talking to an app.

Adopt a Travel Based Daily Routine

Incorporating travel-inspired routines into your day can add variety and excitement to your work life. These rituals can help you stay grounded and focused while adding a touch of global flair.

I wrote an in-depth article on Morning Rituals From Around The World to Inspire Your Day. Let me know what you think! In the meantime, I’ve listed a few ideas below.

Turkish Coffee Ritual

Start your day with a Turkish coffee ritual. Putting away the automatic coffee maker and brewing a strong cup of Turkish coffee can be a mindful activity that sets a positive tone for the day.

Mid-Day Siesta

Let me first say, for the record, that this is my favorite ritual ever.

Take a mid-day siesta like they do in Spain. Allowing yourself a break in the middle of the day can help you return to work with renewed focus and creativity.

Japanese Tea Ceremony

End your day with a mindfulness practice inspired by the Japanese tea ceremony. Prepare and enjoy a cup of matcha tea with intention and gratitude. This ritual can help you unwind and reflect on your accomplishments, fostering a sense of calm and balance.

Plan a Trip to Boost Your Productivity

Okay, I couldn’t resist. Go ahead and pack those bags.

Anticipation and all the accompanying emotions can lift your spirits and provide a much-needed mental boost.

This positive state of mind can enhance creative thinking, making generating innovative ideas and solutions easier.

Moreover, knowing that a rewarding experience is on the horizon can encourage you to complete tasks more efficiently and effectively. It also provides a sense of purpose and direction in your day-to-day activities, helping you maintain a productive mindset.

I will caution you about this productivity booster because it can have the opposite effect. If you’re a planner like me, you might get lost in researching things to do, places to take photos, outfits to wear, and articles to write.

You’ll have to do some personal work to find a balance between planning a trip as motivation and planning one as a distraction.

Choose a Creative Destination

Select a destination known for its creativity and cultural richness. Cities like Paris, New York, and Amsterdam are excellent choices.

Research the local art scenes, culinary options, and historic landmarks to create an itinerary that inspires you.

Make a Travel Vision Board

Create a physical or digital board with images and quotes from your chosen destination.

Visualizing your trip can keep you motivated and excited.

Integrate Travel Plans into Your Goals

Incorporate your travel plans into your personal and professional goals. Use elements of your trip as motivation to complete tasks and achieve milestones.

For example, If I meet this deadline, I can buy myself that crystal-encrusted swimsuit for the trip.

I had to plan a week-long trip just to complete this blog post, and now I can fully immerse myself in booking tours before publishing my next post.
