The Power of Street Art in the World of Design

Reading Time: 4 minutes

Welcome to Houston, where art, culture, and history collide! That’s right, it’s not just fancy restaurants and shooting ranges over. I mean, that’s mostly what it is… but, if you’re an art lover, history buff, or just a curious soul, there’s something special waiting for you in downtown Houston: the Lady Justice Remembrance Mural. In a nutshell – oversized street art commissioned locally by the City of Houston.

I spotted this gorgeous mural during a recent ghost-tour of downtown Houston. I can’t think of a better way to catch up on life than with a haunted pub-crawl? More on that later, because this is a totally serious and professional post.

Street Art in Houston, Lady Justice Remembrance Mural, Downtown Graffiti

Standing tall on the corner of Congress Avenue and Main Street, this breathtaking mural by Houston-based artist Reginald Adams is a scroll-stopper. A walk-stopper? Most walkers are scrolling through their phones these days anyway, so yeah, it’s a walk-scroll stopper.

With a beautifully melanated  Lady Justice holding her scale and sword, flanked by two majestic lions, and a blindfold inscribed with the names of Black men and women who have been killed by police violence, the mural is a poignant reminder of America’s ongoing struggle for justice and equality.

Isn’t it Just Graffiti?

The Lady Justice Remembrance Mural is just the beginning of Houston’s increasingly vibrant street art scene. From colorful murals that celebrate diversity and community, to thought-provoking pieces that tackle important social and political issues, this emerging artform is a nod to the city’s commitment to creativity and social change.

The rise of commissioned street art is a testament to the power of art to transform public spaces and create a sense of community. Cities big and small are increasingly recognizing the value of street art, and are commissioning artists to create murals and installations that reflect their unique identity and history.

When cities invest in public art, they’re not only supporting the creative economy, but they’re also creating opportunities for local artists to share their stories and their perspectives with the world. This builds a sense of pride and community, and creates a much needed inclusive and vibrant art scene.  From murals that showcase the vibrant diversity of a neighborhood, to installations that highlight important moments in a city’s history, this is storytelling at its finest.
