This article explores how to plan a meaningful and rejuvenating staycation, offering unique ideas for staying at home and exploring your local area.
Let’s talk about the refreshing—and yes, crucial—art of resting right at home.
There’s something comforting about being where the Wi-Fi is free and the dress code can change with your mood. Unwinding at home recharges our batteries without the hassle of packing bags or deep breathing through airport security. Seriously, why are they yelling?
Relying solely on travel to reset ourselves can be like expecting a cat to fetch. It’s inconsistent and can lead to emotional damage. If that sounds dramatic, you’ve probably never owned a cat.
While a spontaneous trip to a tropical paradise sounds enticing, it’s not always feasible.

What is a Staycation?
You might hear staycations referred to as “home-cations” or “local getaways.”
They’re the best excuse to enjoy the comfort of home while indulging your wanderlust.
I’ve said many times that the city you live in is a tourist destination for other people. The wonders around you may blend into daily life, but they’re there, waiting to be discovered.
A staycation is a vacation at home or in your hometown exploring attractions, enjoying meals, and sunbathing in the backyard.
Now, how does this compare to a conventional vacation? They’re the same, but a vacation may involve flights, unfamiliar places, and hoping your clothes still fit after your 11th margarita. A staycation strips away the hassle! You can skip the packed suitcases and strict itineraries while still enjoying that ‘away from the grind’ vibe.
But hold your horses—before you think staying home and indulging in Netflix and snacks is a staycation, let’s clarify. A true staycation prioritizes disconnecting, experience something new (no matter how small), and purposely seeking relaxation.
Debunking Myths About Staycations
Myth 1: “Staycations Are Boring Mini-Vacations”
First, they don’t have to be ‘mini’ at all. You can get as lavish and flamboyant as you want during a staycation.
Have you ever heard the saying, “Only boring people get bored?”
Themed days, new activities, and local hidden gems can make a staycation as exciting as a traditional vacation.
Myth 2: “You Can’t Truly Relax During a Staycation”
Confession Time: My first staycation was a fail. Instead of the nourishing self-care I had planned, I custom-built storage for the playroom and fell ill from mold exposure.
The problem was that I didn’t make a plan. I knew what I wanted my staycation to be like, but nothing was in place to make it happen.
The key to a successful staycation is setting clear boundarie. Turn off work emails, set an out-of-office response, and communicate to others that you’re on vacation.
Set an itinerary, plan outfits, know the photos you want to take, and order the supplies you’ll need. The prep work is just as important as the staycation itself.
Myth 3: “Staycations Are Just for Budget-Conscious Travelers”
While it’s true that staycations can be more affordable, they aren’t just for those looking to save money. A staycation can be about enjoying luxury at home, indulging in exclusive experiences, or investing in self-care.
A staycation can be as indulgent as you want, whether with a home spa day or a private chef.
Myth 4: “You Won’t Feel Like You’ve Had a Real Vacation”
The perception that a vacation must involve travel to be fulfilling needs to be updated. The essence of a vacation is about taking time off to rest, recharge, and step away from your routine.
Creating a new home environment, enjoying joyful activities – decluttering not included – and breaking from routine can make a staycation just as rejuvenating a traditional vacation.
Myth 5: “Staycations Are Just for Families”
Okay, here’s my big secret—the best part of my staycations is that I do them solo! I either leave the kids at home with hubby, or send the family away on their own vacation.
Staycations are often associated with family-friendly activities, but equally suitable for singles, couples, or friends looking to reconnect.
Staycations offer flexibility to tailor the experience to your personal needs and preferences. You could plan a romantic getaway at home, a solo self-care retreat, or a fun-filled weekend with friends. Pick your adventure!
Myth 6: “You Have to Stay at Home for it to be a True Staycation.”
I live in Houston, and there’s a saying here: “Houston is an hour away from Houston.” Driving across town counts as both travel and staying home!
A staycation can be experienced in one of two ways: staying at home or venturing to a nearby destination. The key is nearby. No flights, no long drives, no train rides through rolling hills.
Each approach has its own set of pros and cons.
Staying home is the most cost-effective and convenient option. For one thing, I love falling in love with the things I own all over again. Also, there’s no need to worry about packing or travel arrangements. That means most of your time can be spent relaxing (or adventuring).
Some argue that staying home lacks the excitement of exploring new places. Additionally, the temptation to engage in routine chores or work-related tasks can detract from the relaxation of your staycation.
I get that.
The alternative is to choose a local destination within driving distance for your staycation. This option provides a sense of adventure by allowing you to explore new locations or revisit favorite nearby spots.
Opt for day trips or overnight stays to escape your daily routine while supporting local businesses and attractions. The downside of this approach is the additional cost of transportation, potential accommodation, and the time spent traveling. This could be a significant factor if you’re trying to squeeze maximum enjoyment into a tight period.
How to Plan A Staycation
Set Clear Intentions
Before you start your staycation, think about what you want to achieve. Is it relaxation, exploration, or quality family time? Setting clear goals helps you plan activities that align with your intentions, making your staycation more fulfilling.
Create a Budget
Even though you’re staying home, you’ll likely spend money on activities, meals, and a few splurges. Create a budget to keep your finances in check. Allocate funds for things like a gourmet dinner, spa day essentials, or a family outing.
I’ve rounded up some travel budgeting tips for you in my guide, How To Plan a Memorable, Budget-Friendly Family Vacation.
Notify Your Work and Set Boundaries
To ensure your staycation feels like a real break, notify your workplace about your time off and set clear boundaries. None of that “I’ll be away from my desk, but you can reach me on my cell phone” business. Turn off work notifications and resist the urge to check emails. This is your time to unwind and enjoy.
When you have a theme and a timeline, plan your staycation just like a vacation. Create daily itineraries and put aside the clothes you want to wear during your staycation.
Do all the necessary grooming that you save for your getaways — because we’re increasing our tolerance for luxury, right? Wax, shave, pluck, shape, sculpt, paint, and primp like you’re headed to Ibitha!
Make restaurant and event reservations in advance to avoid backing out of your plans at the last minute. Netflix in your PJs is less appealing when you’ve already spent $100 on VIP access to the latest museum exhibit.
Unique Ideas for a Memorable Staycation
Here are some fun ideas to inspire your first (or next) staycation:
Stay-at-Home Staycation Ideas
The Royal Experience
Treat yourself like royalty by bringing luxury services into your home. Hire a private chef, book an in-home massage therapist, and schedule a private yoga or meditation session. And what’s a royal getaway without a catered high tea afternoon in your garden or living room.
Decorate your home with fresh flowers, plush linens, and candles to create a regal atmosphere. Wear your finest loungewear or dress up for dinner to fully embrace the royal theme.
Cultural Immersion
Choose a country or culture you’re curious about and immerse yourself in its traditions. Cook traditional meals, watch foreign films, learn basic phrases, and try a craft from the culture.
For example, a Japanese staycation could include sushi-making, a tea ceremony, and watching classic Kurosawa films.
In-Home Wellness Retreat
Design a wellness retreat that focuses on relaxation and rejuvenation. Start each day with guided meditation or yoga, enjoy detoxifying meals, and indulge in spa treatments.
Schedule time for journaling, reading, or simply enjoying nature in your backyard. Invite a sound therapist into your home to experience the healing power of vibration.
Disconnect from technology and end each night surrounded by cozy blankets, cushions, and low lighting. Consider adding a water feature, like a small fountain, to enhance the calming environment.
Creative Arts Retreat
Spend your staycation diving into creativity. Whether painting, writing, photography, or crafting, dedicate time each day to artistic expression.
Set up a creative studio at home with all the necessary materials. Surround yourself with inspiring quotes, art, or music that fuels your creativity. Also consider enrolling in online workshops or classes, and doing virtual museum tours.

Local Staycation Ideas
Plan an Adventure in Your Own City
Explore your city like a tourist by visiting landmarks, taking a guided tour, or going on a food crawl. Try new activities like a hot air balloon ride, a Segway tour, or kayaking.
Document your adventures with a photo journal or video diary. Create a scrapbook of your discoveries to remember your staycation.
Plan A Luxury Hotel Getaway
Book a stay at a luxury hotel in your city and enjoy the hotel’s pool, spa, and fine dining. Don’t forget to indulge in room service, and take advantage of special services like private tours or in-room treatments.
To make the experience truly special, opt in to extras like champagne on arrival, a gourmet breakfast, or late checkout.
Plan a Gourmet Food Tour Staycation
Plan a gourmet tour of your city by visiting the best restaurants, bakeries, and markets.
Book a cooking class with a local chef or take a food and wine pairing class. Plan a visit to a local vineyard, brewery, or distillery for a tasting experience.
Create a personalized map of your culinary adventures and plan your route ahead of time. To add to the experience, consider renting a luxury car for the period.
Plan a Nature Escape Staycation
You can hike local trails, visit botanical gardens, or rent a glamping site in a nearby nature reserve.
Plan activities like bird watching, stargazing, or a picnic in the most scenic spots.
Bring a good book, a hammock, and a thermos of your favorite hot drink. Photograph or sketch nature’s beauty, or simply unplug and soak in the tranquility.

Documenting Your Staycation
Documenting your staycation is essential for capturing cherished memories and fostering a sense of mindfulness and appreciation for your surroundings.
Just as you would take photos of breathtaking landscapes or exotic meals on a traditional vacation, do so during your staycation. Staycations, too, are precious memories.
But don’t stop at the photos. Do you have a travel collection? Shot glasses, magnets, stamps? Make sure to add to your collection after this staycation, too.
Reflection is a valuable part of any vacation. It allows you to appreciate the experiences and understand the benefits. Take some time to reflect on what you enjoyed most about your staycation and how it made you feel.
Make staycations a regular part of your self-care routine. Regular breaks, even short ones, can help maintain your well-being and prevent burnout. Start planning your next staycation by considering what you enjoyed and what you’d like to explore next time.
