The Cactus Cast – Episode 001

Reading Time: 3 minutes

We did it!

MisterE and I made time for each other this week! Cue the confetti!

It was just before sunrise on a Sunday morning, and we had to tiptoe through the house so as not to rouse our overlords sweet, beloved children, but we did it!

Earlier this month when we decided to prioritize weekly check-ins with each other, we had the bright idea to record it all. Why? Because there clearly isn’t enough stress in our lives.

I had to scroll all the way back to mid-May to find a picture of just the two of us just hanging out together. Yikes!

But really, we thought a podcast would help to keep us accountable. And who knows, future sociologists might uncover our recordings and use them as a study in friendship. Also, all the cool kids have a podcast these days. Actually, all the really cool kids are on TikTok, but we have to draw the line somewhere.

And so The Cactus Cast has come to life.

It’s not perfect by any means.  We don’t have a cool intro or space age sound effects between topics. The sound quality drops a few times, and our kids make a cameo pretty early in the recording. Did I mention it’s nowhere near perfect? But it was a very real moment in our very real lives and we had fun with it.

Have you ever seen a more bootleg sound studio? It doesn’t have to be pretty in order to work! I show you this to encourage you to just start on whatever that project is you’ve been putting off.

2020 is our year to start things, not to perfect things. We both learn by doing, so we figured that the only way to create a great podcast is to have a podcast.

This year, next year and possibly the year after that, our creative motto is going to be

“Good Enough is Good Enough.”

While we get a feel for how we want to run the podcast, we are following these three rules:

  1. HBK – Honest But Kind: we still have to live under the same roof after our check-ins
  2. Solid24 – Nothing said during the podcast can be used in an argument for a full 24 hours
  3. 20&Done –  We’ve got less than twenty minutes to get this done. Hurry!

Have a listen to our pilot episode (below) and let us know what you think. What did you like? Dislike? What can we improve?

The Cactus Cast Episode 001 — Jumping In With Both Feet

You’ll figure out pretty quickly who is the yin and who is the yang in this relationship. They say “opposites attract,” and they’re not kidding. MisterE measures his words while I tumble cheerfully over mine. He’s the planner, I’m the doer, and together we just seem to make things (like this podcast) work…. Well, most of the time we do. Actually, just some of the time. Look, we’re still together, ok?

As we learn to use the software and tools available to us, we plan to have guest couples join us after our check-in to discuss a topic of the day. Most of our greatest marriage hacks we’ve learned or developed from sharing experiences with our inner circle.

If we’re personal friends, we will be calling you to participate. And if you ignore our calls, we know where you live.

It’ll be great! We insist.

Have fun!
