The 5 Best Fall Travel Destinations in the US

Reading Time: 8 minutes

This article is about the best fall travel destinations in the US, with activity recommendations.

There’s something magical about fall travel. The air is crisp, the leaves transform into a vibrant palette of reds, oranges, and yellows, and the pace of life slows down just a bit.

It’s the perfect time to explore new places. The crowds are thinner than during peak summer, so you can explore without the hustle and bustle.

I like to keep my fall travel domestic since the holidays are around the corner, and hosting and gifting will stretch my bank account.

In the fall, travel costs are lower, with off-peak prices for flights, accommodations, and activities.

Of course, the weather is another huge advantage. Whether you want to escape the heat or avoid the winter chill, fall offers the perfect balance so you can spend time outdoors.

BONUS – Best Fall Destination for Homebodies: Your own city

Fall is the ideal season for a staycation, as the shorter days and cooler weather invite a sense of coziness and exploration right in your own city.

With vibrant autumn foliage and seasonal festivities, your local area transforms into a picturesque backdrop for discovery—unless you live in Texas, where our trees look the same year-round.

Staycations are low-stakes and affordable, so you can enjoy the comforts of home while still experiencing the excitement of travel. As a bonus, you get to support local businesses!

By viewing your city through the eyes of a local, you can uncover hidden gems and enjoy familiar spots from a fresh perspective.

I’ve put a how-to summary below, but be sure to check out my guide, The Art of the Staycation: How to Plan a Vacation at Home.

7-Step Process to Planning a Fall Staycation

  1. Research Local Events: Check your area’s community calendars for festivals, farmers’ markets, or fall-themed events.
  2. Create a Bucket List: Compile a list of new attractions, eateries, or activities you’ve wanted to explore but haven’t had the time for.
  3. Plan Your Itinerary: Divide your staycation into themed days—such as ‘Nature Day’ for hiking and picnicking, or ‘Cultural Day’ for museum visits and art walks.
  4. Try Local Dining: Make reservations at local restaurants you’ve been curious about or visit food trucks and cafes that are popular with residents.
  5. Go Outside: We spend too much time in our homes, cars and offices. Take advantage of the fall weather by visiting parks, taking scenic drives, planning a day of apple picking, or visiting a pumpkin patch.
  6. Explore Hidden Gems: Look for local libraries, art galleries, or small businesses that aren’t well advertised but offer unique experiences.
  7. Document Your Journey: Capture memories by taking photos or journaling about your staycation adventure, treating it just as you would a vacation to Bali.

You can find some ideas to elevate your staycation in my article, 7 Creative Ways to Enjoy Travel Without Leaving Home

Fall is a magical time to travel in the United States. With fewer crowds, lower prices, and ideal weather, it’s the perfect season to explore new destinations and create lasting memories.

What exciting activities do you have on your itinerary before the winter weather hits?
